Oncofertility & Medical Fertility Preservation

Women diagnosed with an illness such as cancer might consider egg freezing to preserve their reproductive options. Because medical treatments, including chemotherapy or radiotherapy, may adversely affect the reproductive system, both oncologists and reproductive specialists often recommend egg freezing as a preventative measure. The team at RMA of New York has extensive experience helping patients through the egg freezing process as expediently as possible prior to beginning cancer treatment.

Women may also undergo egg freezing treatment due to a family history or higher risk of developing certain cancers, particularly ovarian cancer, or premature ovarian failure, early menopause, or endometriosis.

Fertility Preservation as You Prepare for Cancer Treatment

As you begin the journey of deciding how you will pursue your family building goals following diagnosis of cancer, it is important to know that options are available to you through breakthroughs in medical science. It is likely your oncology specialist has suggested treatment with you which may include chemotherapy, radiation and surgery, and typically the treatment itself may have significant adverse effects on your future fertility. It is recommended, therefore, that whenever possible, you begin considering your reproductive options prior to receiving any treatment. Practical first steps include consulting with a reproductive endocrinologist who will work closely with you and your oncological team. Fertility preservation treatments are available that can safeguard your future fertility and help you achieve your dreams of creating a family. Couples experiencing this difficult time together should know that procedures such as oocyte and embryo cryopreservation (egg and embryo freezing) are available to women just as sperm cryopreservation is available to men. Your fertility preservation treatment can be achieved within weeks and can be scheduled around cancer diagnostic procedures and treatments with your oncology specialist.

Post Treatment Fertility Preservation with Livestrong Fertility

After cancer treatment, human reproduction can be compromised. RMA of New York is able to provide a variety of procedures for after cancer treatment, when fertility concerns regarding early menopause may arise. Eggs can be frozen without fertilization, or fertilized in the lab to create embryos and then frozen. Both options can provide women with the comfort and confidence of knowing that even after cancer treatment, they can preserve their ability to have their own biological children in the future.

The Livestrong Foundation is a non-profit organization that is dedicated to supporting those whose lives have been impacted by cancer. In support of their mission and in the belief that families facing cancer should not have their reproductive options taken away from them, Reproductive Medicine Associates of New York is proud to partner with Livestrong Fertility in offering discounted post treatment fertility services.
