RMA of New York Publishes Study on Reducing Multiples Resulting From IVF

In the competitive IVF industry we live in today, there are IVF centers out there that may, in an attempt to improve apparent success rates, transfer a greater number of embryos. The actual physical, emotional, and financial costs of this strategy may be far greater than realized because of the increased morbidity that is associated with multiple pregnancies. Given that multiple gestation is the greatest risk factor for premature delivery, it is logical to conclude that a cavalier attitude toward multiples will lead to significant future neonatal morbidity, if not mortality.

The current method of calculating IVF success rates considers multiple gestations and prematurely delivered infants to be successes, rather than failures. Patients may see multiple births as an acceptable outcome and may even construe multiple gestations as actualizing a better return on their financial investment. They may be less aware about the greater risk of neonatal morbidity and pregnancy loss. When patients evaluate IVF programs on the basis of Centers for Disease Control and Prevention-reported data, they may conclude that a program with a higher success rate may be preferable to a program with a reduced success rate, even if the latter program has a very low multiple-pregnancy rate.

For the purposes of the study, RMA of New York chose to evaluate how reclassifying IVF success would change the current way we perceive programs. By incorporating higher order multiple gestation rates into the calculation of success rates, we attempted

Dr. Tanmoy Mukherjee Discusses Acupuncture and IVF Success Rates

Dr. Tanmoy Mukherjee, leading Fertility Specialist and Co-Medical Director of RMA of New York, provides insight into a recent study that evaluated acupuncture and IVF pregnancy rates. The study was published in January 2012 in the scientific journal Fertility and Sterility, and has been covered recently by media outlets such as Reuters Health.

Dr. Tanmoy Mukherjee provided the following insights on the topic of acupuncture and IVF success rates:
Complementary and alternative therapies are widely used alongside infertility treatments, and acupuncture ranks among the most popular of these therapies. Acupuncture has been successfully utilized by Eastern medical traditions for thousands of years, but its role in the modern medical armamentarium has not been well established. As a result, a link between acupuncture and IVF outcome is likely to be of considerable interest to clinicians and patients alike.

Advocates of acupuncture have suggested that IVF outcomes may be improved through a number of possible mechanisms, including a central sympathoinhibitory effect, resulting in increased uterine blood flow, which in turn might improve endometrial receptivity. In addition, a perceived reduction in anxiety and stress after treatment has often been cited as justification for its use.

The systematic review and meta-analysis recently reported in Fertility and Sterility used the clinical pregnancy and live birth rates in 24 trials as indicators of the effect of acupuncture performed during IVF treatment on cycle outcome. In studies using appropriate controls, acupuncture increases live birth rates. While not conclusive, this report does set the stage for the design of further studies examining the role of acupuncture in the treatment of infertility.
